Why Altair

Institutional quality team

Altair boasts a high calibre team of 20 investment and business management professionals recruited from some of the largest and most successful financial institutions in the country. They have spent decades honing their skills across a range of firms, including private client wealth, financial advisory and institutional investment businesses. Years of interaction with leaders from different aspects of Australian corporate and government life has given us an impressive network to draw upon.

Key strengths of our team include the following:

  • Our Chief Investment Officer has had over 30 years of investment experience and was co-founder in the 90’s of the very successful boutique manager, Hunter Hall.

  • Our Chief Economist and Investment Strategist have a combined 70+ years’ experience in finance. They play a critical role in providing a macro view on political, economic and industry issues that may impact on investments.

  • Our Portfolio Managers have successfully managed small, customised portfolios as well as multi-billion dollar portfolios for large corporates over various investment cycles and in times of market adversity.

  • We are well covered in the healthcare and mining sectors, where specific industry knowledge can be invaluable. Our Senior Analyst holds a PhD in Medicine and has held various medical research roles in her career. Our Senior Consultant Analyst is a qualified geologist with around 30 years’ experience in the mining industry.

  • Our Equities Dealer began his career in London financial markets. He provides our team with valuable market insights and best practice techniques in trading.

Innovative and accountable culture

The collective skills and experience of our team has been instrumental in crafting our innovative investment style and proprietary stock screening and analysis tools. Furthermore, we believe success in managing shares is as much about judgement as it is technical analysis. We encourage our team members to debate ideas and perceptions and to be accountable for investment decisions.

Unique ‘change driven’ approach

As an active manager, Altair’s investment decisions are underpinned by a simple, yet powerful philosophy – we believe change is a key influence of company performance. We look for companies that display innovation or adaptability and a sustainable competitive advantage in a changing world. Our aim is to identify the nature, timing and impact of change, as these catalysts are then likely to affect a company’s stock price. We believe our ability to identify potential catalysts gives us our competitive advantage.

Personal Service

Altair provides MDA investors with a personalised service which includes regular updates on the portfolio to help you keep track of your investment and reports that can assist at tax time.

Time (and cost) efficient

As well as managing your portfolio, Altair also takes care of administration, with services such as tax record-keeping, mail management, corporate actions, as well as maintaining all records and transaction reporting.

Risk aware

How does a great stock idea translate to a sound investment? Altair does not chase “yield” or “growth” stocks or get distracted by market momentum, nor are we swayed by public sentiment. We don’t use derivatives, short-selling or leverage to generate returns.  Our focus is on building a concentrated portfolio of stocks that will deliver above market returns without taking excessive risks. Extensive portfolio risk analysis is a fundamental part of our investment process.

Independent, holistic research

Altair receives multiple stockbroking houses’ institutional research as one of the inputs (amongst many others) to our investment assessment process. We use seasoned judgement and experience to debate and analyse stocks so that there is always a genuine investment rationale behind our decision-making.

The end game is not to pick ‘hot stocks’ and generate high portfolio turnover but to build portfolios that can secure long-term wealth for our investors.
