Our Investment Philosophy
“Change is a key influence of companies and stock price performance and its impacts are mispriced by equity markets.”
As an active manager, Altair’s investment decisions are underpinned by a simple, yet powerful philosophy – we believe change is a key influence of company performance. We look for companies that display innovation or adaptability and a sustainable competitive advantage in a changing world. Our aim is to identify the nature, timing and impact of change, as these catalysts are then likely to affect a company’s stock price. We believe our ability to identify potential catalysts gives us our competitive advantage.
Our investment beliefs guide our decision-making when managing your investments. This includes the way our investment team filters and assesses ideas and information on companies. Importantly, we are flexible and pragmatic and look to invest where you benefit from the market’s inefficiencies. We aim to deliver you improved returns over the long term within a disciplined, risk-controlled framework.
When we review a company we ask the following questions:
-
Will the company benefit from change(for example technological changes or strong growth in developing nations)
-
Is the company innovative and well-run, and will their business strategy and financial resources go the distance?
-
Do we have the full picture when meeting the company’s management, competitors and regulators and does this tie in with our financial health-check of the company?
-
Is the company’s stock mispriced?
-
Will the company perform better (e.g. generate better growth in earnings and returns on invested capital) than others?
Once we have evaluated a company, its financial prospects and valuation in detail, we consider if it is a suitable investment opportunity in light of the risks involved and market conditions.
